Oakland, Maryland, is known around the area for Deep Creek Lake, snow-sports, and incredible hiking. We’re proud to be established in a place with so many thrilling outdoor activities, but sometimes a short journey to a nearby adventure is fun, too! Although Wisp Resort has some sledding options, the best place to hit up the sled runs is Blackwater Falls State Park. Not only is Blackwater Falls an immense amount of fun, but the drive from our hotel to your destination is full of fun things to do. We’re excited to share a few of our favorites below!
Sugar & Spice Bakery and Cheese
About 20 minutes from the Inn at Deep Creek, you’ll come across Sugar & Spice Bakery and Cheese. This small-town bakery has many admirers in the area, and one quick stop there will tell you why. Delicious pies, homemade jams, pastries galore, and local cheeses line the shelves. Not to mention, there are handmade household wares all around as well! One guest writes, “Fantastic baked goods and very friendly! Every time we go to Deep Creek Lake, it is a must stop!” Whether you visit on your way to or from Blackwater Falls, you’ll leave with some delicious baked goods and cheeses, and we guarantee you’ll want to visit again before your trip is over!
Blackwater Falls State Park
Another short 30 minutes in the car, and you’ll arrive from Sugar & Spice to the sledding capital of the Deep Creek Lake area! This park, located across the border in West Virginia, is “named for the amber waters of Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade tinted by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.” While the falls and park are beautiful, the real claim-to-fame during the winter season is the sledding! For only $26, you’ll have access to 2 hours of sledding down a beautifully groomed hillside. With a “Magic Carpet” to take you to the top of the hill, you don’t have to worry about the dreaded climb, dragging a sled behind you. Sit on your sled, and the Magic Carpet will do the rest! Mountain State Brewing Co.
A short drive from sledding, Mountain State Brewing Co. is a local favorite and has plenty of delicious brews for you and your friends. While this stop is only for our adult guests, there are plenty of restaurants along the way back from Blackwater Falls Sled Hill. With 4 locations, one in Thomas, WV about 10 minutes from
Blackwater, and one in the Deep Creek Lake area, about 10 minutes from our hotel, the choice is yours depending on when and where you’d like to stop for a beer! The menu is continually changing, but their four flagship brews are always available. One of the four constants is called “Cold Trail Blonde Ale,” described as “A light, easy-drinking American blonde ale featuring a healthy dose of oats and wheat. Light in color and body, this beer is the perfect finish to any day’s outdoor activity.” Drink responsibly!
